William C. "Bill" Steele, 96 of Ringtown, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at the Shenandoah Senior Living Community.
Born in Lower William Penn on June 26, 1927, he was the son of the late Charles and Ann (Dougherty) Steele.
He was a 1945 graduate of the former West Mahanoy Township High School, Shenandoah Heights.
Bill served his country, first in the Navy during the end of World War II where he received the American Theater Medal and the Victory Medal. He then enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War having earned the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star.
He was employed as a mechanic and break specialist at JCPenny and Firestone both in Newburgh, New York. He also worked as an inspector in the quality control department for both IBM and Tarkett both also in New York prior to his retirement.
In 1966, Bill married the former Jean S. Petrizzo Giuliani who preceded him in death in 1971. In 1992, he married the former Florence Knieriem who preceded him in death in 2018.
He was of the Catholic faith and was a member of the Teamsters Local 445.
Bill lived and enjoyed a simple way of life. He liked Sunday car rides and daily trips to Redners. He was a homebody who enjoyed doing jobs around the house and in his yard. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Bill also was a car fanatic; he liked everything including hotrods, classics and antiques and was especially interested in Studebakers and Chryslers.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents and his wives were his sister and brother-in-law, Anna Marie and Edward Kowalski; niece, Patricia Ann Kowalski; and a nephew, Joseph W. Skubel.
Surviving are his niece and caregiver, Nancy M. Pytak and her husband Frank of Shenandoah; niece, Mary Catherine Skubel of Ringtown; nephew, Edward Kowalski and his wife Jessica of Shenandoah Heights; and great-nieces, great-nephews and their families.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 10:00 am in St. Casimir Church, 229 North Jardin Street, Shenandoah with Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor as the celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in Annunciation BVM Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. A viewing will be held on Thursday morning from 9:00 am until 10:00 am at Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 South Jardin Street, Shenandoah.
