Salome Sally (Kupstas) Marcavage, formerly of Shenandoah Heights, passed away Wednesday morning at Seton Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Orwigsburg at the age of 91.

Born on July 13, 1923, Sally was the third baby born in Shenandoah Heights to the late Salome (Stravinskas) and William Kupstas.

She was a graduate of the Class of 1941 of West Mahanoy Township High School. During World War II, Sally worked in the garment factories in Shenandoah. Following her marriage to the late Charles A. Marcavage in 1948, she was a full time homemaker until the 1960s when she returned to work. She held a variety of jobs during her lifetime, working in the garment industry, as a retail clerk and floral arranger in F.W. Woolworths, as a cafeteria worker at Shenandoah Valley High School, as the manager of the summer lunch program in Shenandoah Heights, and at the Evening Herald as part of the distribution team.

Sally was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah. She was also a member of the former St. Georges Lithuanian Roman Catholic parish and served on the Ladies Auxiliary, the Society of the Sacred Heart, the Rosary Society, and was a volunteer for many years at the parish bingo. In addition, she was active as a Babe Ruth mother and assisted her late husband Charles with many camping trips and fund-raisers when he was a Boy Scout Troop Leader. She collected donations on behalf of the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association, and she supported many charities that help the needy and animal welfare.

Sallys greatest joys in life were her family and helping others. She was an avid gardener and her green thumb could make any plant thrive. As a young teenager, Sally learned to roller skate and became an accomplished skater and dancer and passed this love on to her granddaughter Shannon. She was especially beloved by children, and was honorary grandmother to many.

In addition to her parents, Sally was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 2010, her son Charles in 2006, her son-in-law Jack Hazlinsky, her sisters Nellie (Kupstas) Zack, Violet (Kupstas) Thomas, Anne (Kupstas) Wonsock, and Eleanor (Kupstas) Testa, and her brother Frank Ben Kupstas.

Surviving are a daughter Karen (Marcavage) and her husband Brian Dixon of Sandwich, MA; daughter Nancy (Marcavage) Hazlinsky and fianc Joseph Murton of Lewisburg, PA; her grandchildren Eric Hazlinsky of Somerville, MA; Matthew Dixon of Los Angeles; Scott Hazlinsky of North Carolina; and Shannon Dixon of Los Angeles. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. from Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 South Jardin Street, Shenandoah. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. in Divine Mercy Church, 232 West Cherry Street, Shenandoah. Rev. Msgr. Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor will officiate. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Dawn Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.

Relatives and friends may call Sunday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be made in Sallys memory to the charity of ones choice.
