Robert J. Bob Matakonis, age 66 of Shenandoah passed away Monday evening at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg.
Born in Shenandoah on April 11, 1947 he was a son of the late Albert and Evelyn (Hill) Matakonis.
He was a 1966 graduate of the former J.W. Cooper High, Shenandoah. He was a talented basketball player having scored over a thousand career points for the Blue Devils. He also attended Bloomsburg College.
Bob was a decorated Army veteran having served in the Vietnam War.
He had worked as a carpenter and a supervisor in the construction trade.
Bob was a member of the Glovers Hill Athletic Club, Shenandoah. He was a former member of St. George Church, Shenandoah and a former CYO basketball coach.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was a sister at birth, Debra Matakonis.
Surviving are his wife of forty two years, the former Rose Mary Kuczynski; one son, Albert Matakonis, Shenandoah; three daughters, Geraldine Ulicny and her husband Joseph, Shenandoah; Carrie Ann Miravich and her husband Mark, Williamstown, NJ and Chloe Matakonis, Shenandoah; one sister, Susan Gomosky and her husband Vincent, Girardville; eleven grandchildren, Abby, Alec, Rosy, Susy, Sean, Tad, Anthony, Della, Olivia, Matthew, & Willow; one great-granddaughter, Ellie; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Sunday evening, 8:00 pm at Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah. Rev. Msgr. Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor will officiate. Interment with military honors will be private at the convenience of the family.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Sunday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, Shenandoah is in charge of the arrangements.
