Obituary

Robert E. Berresford, age 82 of Weston Place, Shenandoah passed away on Monday evening at home after a lengthy illness surrounded by his family.

Born in William Penn on June 7, 1930 he was the son of the late George and Gertrude (Baker) Berresford.

He was a graduate of West Mahanoy Township High School where he played all sports excelling at baseball.

Bob was a decorated Army Veteran. He served in the Korean War, achieving the rank of Sergeant and earning three bronze stars. He was proud of his service to his country.

He retired from Dana Corporation, Reading.

Mr. Berresford was a lifelong member of the William Penn United Methodist Church.

Bob played for various minor league baseball teams such as the Harrisburg Senators and pitched a no-hitter while with them. He also played in Savannah where he pitched against Hank Aaron and would often say with a smile, He never got one of those home runs from me. He was a Babe Ruth Coach for many years and later in life, enjoyed umpiring softball games in the region. He was later inducted into the local Softball Hall of Fame. He also was inducted into the PA Sports Hall of Fame " Northern Anthracite Chapter. He, along with his dear friend Vic Marconi were major figures in the restoration and maintenance of the William Penn Softball League Field.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were two brothers, George and Albert Berresford and two sisters, June Davis and Betty Davis.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, the former Joanne F. Knox formerly of Easton, MD; three daughters, Debra wife of Andrew Ulicny of Shenandoah Heights, Lisa wife of Joseph Betkavsky of Little Meadows and Nancy wife of Joseph Costa of Frackville; his cherished grandchildren, Nicole Ulicny, Dr. Justin Seibert and his wife Dr. Amber Eade, Kayley Morgan, Rebecca Costa, Joseph Costa and Anna Betkavsky; a sister, Nancy Bauzon of Deerfield, FL; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Bob loved his wife and family above all and never missed an event involving his daughters or grandchildren, sitting through endless games, plays and recitals with pride and patience. He and his wife enjoyed travel and made several cross country trips after his retirement and enjoyed many trips during the winter visiting his sister in Florida.

Prayer and scripture services will be held Friday at 10:15 AM from Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah. Rev. Susan Wollyung will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at 12:30 PM in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Thursday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
