Paul C. Pecunas Jr., 50, formerly of Shenandoah passed away peacefully at his home in Philadelphia.
Born in Ashland, September 27, 1969, he was the son of Eileen Pecunas of Shenandoah and the late Paul C. Pecunas Sr.
Paul was raised in Shenandoah and later graduated from Shenandoah Valley School District in 1990 and was an honorary member of the Blue Devils football team.
Upon graduation Paul attended Edinboro University, majoring in communication, and worked for several colleges as a technology specialist. Each summer Paul would travel to Temple University, teaching others with communication disabilities the functions of a liberator. He was a pioneer in the field of communications devices for the voice impaired.
Living in Western Pennsylvania for many years, Paul was known for his stand up – sit down comedy act at the Funny Bone in Pittsburgh. His acts as the "Generic Unicorn" has brought much laughter to those around him.
Paul was awarded "The Key to Philadelphia" through Temple University. The award was presented to him by ACES, Augmentive Communication and Empowerment Support for using his voice in unique and important ways. He was also a guest on a segment of the Howard Stern show, Dateline, and 2020 news broadcasts for his ability to teach others to communicate while having a disability. Those who have known Paul, knew he exemplified the idea of never letting his disability get in the way of anything, and taught many about the gift of life, through example.
Surviving is his mother Eileen, two sisters, Heather Smalley and her husband Jason, Lake Wynonah, and Allison Bolinsky, and her husband Frank Jr, of Frackville, and was a loving uncle to Katie and Jake Smalley and Rylee and Aaron Bolinsky.
Religious services will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at 7:30 pm at Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin Street, Shenandoah with Rev. Christopher Zelonis officiating. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Interment will be held on Monday, September 21, 2020 at 11:00 am in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. All federal and state COVID-19 regulations will be observed.
