Obituary

Leona M. (Bobowski) Karvois, R.N., 86 of Shenandoah passed away on Friday morning, August 25, 2017 at her residence.

Born in McAdoo on February 24, 1931 she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Rush) Bobowski.

She was a 1948 graduate of the former McAdoo High School. In 1953 she graduated from the former Hazleton State Hospital School of Nursing where she attained the highest scholastic average in her class. Shortly after graduation she passed the state boards for nursing and became a Registered Nurse (RN).

On July 17, 1960 in the formerSt.KunegundaChurch, McAdooshe married William J. Bill Karvois, Jr. who preceded her in death on April 13, 2002.

Leona first worked for Dr. John Delehanty in Hazleton until she married in 1960. While raising her family, she worked with her husband as the proprietors of the former Karvois Dry Cleaning, Shenandoah. She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed working the family business. She later took additional classes in medicine and pharmacology and returned to nursing as a charge nurse at the Shenandoah Manor Nursing Home for almost twenty years until her retirement in 1998. However, she never fully retired. For many years she served as Deputy Local Registrar of Vital Statistics for the State of Pennsylvania for her husband who was the longtime Local Registrar. Upon his death, she became Local Registrar for District 54-494 until her retirement on May 31, 2017. Throughout that time, she enthusiastically and efficiently certified death certificates for fifteen funeral homes morning, noon and night.

She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah, St. Casimirs Church, Shenandoah. Leona was a member of the former Elks Ladies Auxiliary, Shenandoah. She was an avid sports fan; she liked all sports but when it came to basketball, the Boston Celtics were her favorite. She also enjoyed making trips to the local casinos and daily jaunts uptown to socialize with her friends at the coffee shop.

Leona wore many different hats in life; however, in more recent years, the one most dear to her heart was that of Grandma . It gave her great joy to talk about the abilities and accomplishments of her grandchildren and it gave her even greater joy to be with them.

Preceding her in death in addition to her parents and husband was one brother Walter Bowski.

Surviving are one daughter, Maria Karvois with Frank Terranova of Langhorne; one son, Stephen Junior Karvois with his wife Joelle of Shenandoah; one grandson, Joseph Junebug Karvois; two granddaughters, Jourdin and Ellie Karvois; two sisters, Theresa Kocis with her husband Dr. Methodius Kocis of Macungie and Mary Krobock of Allentown; aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
