Joseph J. Wallace, Jr., 88 of Shenandoah Heights passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 5, 2022 at his residence.
Born in Shenandoah on August 29, 1934, he was the son of the late Joseph J. Wallace, Sr. and the late Helen (Harun) Wallace.
He was a 1952 graduate of the former Shenandoah Catholic High School and received a certificate in advertising and marketing from Penn State University.
Mr. Wallace was a decorated Army veteran having served his country in the Korean War. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.
Joe retired as the publisher of the former Shenandoah Evening Herald.
On November 15, 1958 in the former St. George Church, Shenandoah, he married the former Joan M. Valetske who survives.
He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah and the former St. George Church, the A.P. Damato Medal of Honor Post #792, Shenandoah, and the Commanders Club of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Joe was a life member the Shenandoah Heights Fire Company. He was also an active member of the Greater Shenandoah Area Senior Citizens where he formerly served as Sergeant at Arms.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was his sister, Theresa Wojcik.
Surviving in addition to his wife of sixty-four years, Joan M. Wallace are his son, Joseph S. Wallace of Hazleton; two daughters, Susan Whitehair of White Haven and Lynn Gallo and her husband Joseph of Mahanoy City; five grandchildren, Ty, Brielle, Joel, Kaitlyn and John Joseph; one great-granddaughter, Olivia; nieces, nephews with their families and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 9, 2022 at 10:00 am in Divine Mercy Church, 232 West Cherry Street, Shenandoah with Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor as the celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. A visitation will be held on Friday morning from 9:00 am until 10:00 am in Divine Mercy Church.
