John C. "Jack" Bernhard, 84, of Frackville, passed away peacefully Thursday morning at Ridgeview Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, Shenandoah Heights.

Born in Shenandoah, Nov. 13, 1930, he was a son of the late George and Anna Powell Bernhard.

John was a 1948 graduate of the former West Mahanoy Township High School.

He was a decorated Army veteran of the Korean War . He received the Occupation Medal with Germany clasp and the National Defense Service Medal.

He first worked as a milkman for the former Brokhoff's Dairy, Shenandoah, and then worked and retired from the former Zapata Industries, Frackville, as an inspector.

On Sept. 11, 1955, at the Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, Frackville, he married his wife, the former Anna Mae Houser, who survives.

John was a member of Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, Friendship Fire Company and Frackville Senior Citizens, all of Frackville; and AMVETS Post 7 and the Rescue Hook and Ladder Fire Company, both of Shenandoah. He was a member of the board of directors and the treasurer of Odd Fellows Cemetery Association, Shenandoah, and he was also the treasurer and past Noble Grand of the Odd Fellows Lodge 591, Shenandoah. John was also a member of the Schuylkill County Firefighters Association.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting, especially with his beagles. He took great pleasure in spending time with his grandchildren and family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Adam Sukana.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 59 years, are three daughters, Patti, wife of Melvin Johnson, Fountain Springs, Ashland, Lynda, wife of George Rittle, Ringtown, and Bonnie Bernhard Sukana and her husband, Andrew, Frackville; six grandchildren, Brandi and Christopher Johnson, Sara Bloschock and Stephen, Rebecca and John Rittle; a brother, Ronald Bernhard and his wife, Margaret, Shenandoah Heights; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, Frackville. The Rev. Gene Stevenson, pastor, will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. Relatives and friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.
