Obituary

John F. Bagienski, age 94 of Shenandoah passed away Sunday at St. Lukes University Hospital, Bethlehem.

Born in Shenandoah on March 12, 1922 he was a son of the late Joseph and Sophia (Kochanowska) Bagienski.

John was a graduate of the former J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah.

Mr. Bagienski was a highly decorated World War II Army veteran serving in the 135th Infantry Regiment 34th Division. He received the Purple Heart Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with One Bronze Star, the World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

On November 16, 1946 in St. Casimirs Church, Shenandoah he married the former Catherine M. Kitty Martinick who survives.

For 25 years he worked for the federal government; the greatest part of his career was in medical maintenance for the Tobyhanna Army Depot and his final year working was in the Shenandoah Post Office as a mail carrier.

John was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah formerly St. Casimir's Church, Shenandoah. He was a life member and the oldest living member of the Polish American Fire Company, Shenandoah. He was a member and former commander of both the A.P. Damato Medal of Honor Post #792 and the Amvets Post both of Shenandoah. John was also a member of the Six County Firemens Association and Greater Shenandoah Area Senior Citizens. He also served as a former Shenandoah Borough Councilman.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were three brothers, Joseph, Edward and Richard and two sisters, Stella Krash and Loretta Brownlee.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 70 years, Catherine M. Kitty Baginski are one son, John M. Bagienski of Leesburg, Florida; two daughters, Janet Bagienski and Robert Zaretskie, Sr. of Shenandoah and MariLynn Bagienski of Barnesville; one brother Bernard Bagienski of Middlesex, New Jersey; one grandson, Robert Zaretskie, Jr. and his wife Jessica of Lake Wynonah, Auburn; one great-grandson, Blaize Zaretskie; nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:45 am in St. Casimirs Church, the sacred worship site of Divine Mercy Parish, 229 N. Jardin St., Shenandoah. Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at 1:00 pm in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Relatives and friends may call at St. Casimirs Church on Monday morning from 8:45 am until 10:45 am.
