James M. Hughes, 94 of Shenandoah Heights passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at Geisinger St. Luke's Hospital, Orwigsburg. Born in Shenandoah on July 8, 1928, he was a son of the late Edward and Frances (Zkosky) Hughes. He was a 1945 graduate of the former West Mahanoy Township High School, Shenandoah Heights. Mr. Hughes was a decorated World War II Army Veteran. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupational Medal Japan. James retired from the Steamfitters and Pipefitters Local 524, Scranton where he was a member for over fifty years. He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah, the former Annunciation BVM Church, the Shenandoah Heights Fire Company, the Greater Shenandoah Area Senior Citizens, and the Shenandoah Amvets Post. James was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles and attended many games throughout his life. He was also a fan of Penn State and Notre Dame. He enjoyed visiting local casinos and doing the daily cross word puzzles. Preceding him in death in addition to his father and mother who was a Gold Star Mother were three brothers, Joseph, Edward and Bernard Hughes; four sisters, Catherine M. "Kitty" Donovan, Geraldine C. "Gerri" Flynn, Mary Mulroy and Frances Mack. Surviving are his sister, Jean Dower of Ashland; nephew and caregivers, James E. Donovan and his wife Kathleen of Shenandoah Heights; additional nephews, nieces, cousins and their families. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at 10:00 am in Divine Mercy Church, 232 West Cherry Street, Shenandoah with Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor as the celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in Annunciation BVM Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. A viewing will be held in Divine Mercy Church prior to the mass from 9:00 am until 10:00 am. Expressions of sympathy can be made to Divine Mercy Parish, 108 West Cherry Street, Shenandoah, PA 17976.
