George R. Lesko Jr., 91 of Shenandoah passed away on September 6, 2022, at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill East Norwegian Street, Pottsville.
Born January 31, 1931 at the former Ashland Hospital, Butler Township. He was a son of the late George Lesko and Jennie M. (Kulesa) Lesko.
George graduated in 1948 from Shenandoah Catholic High School.
He enlisted in the Air Force and was very proud of his twenty years of service. He was a veteran of the Cold War. George was a member of Strategic Air Command (SAC) which maintained America's defensive force of jet bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles. He was an aircraft supply inventory manager for Air Force One. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant E-7. After retiring from the Air Force. George worked in home repair and remodeling.
George was a faithful member of the former St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church now Divine Mercy Parish. He was active in the Anthony P. Damato Medal of Honor American Legion Post #792 serving in multiple leadership positions including Post Commander. He belonged to the American Military Society, the Air Force Sergeants Association and the Greater Shenandoah Area Senior Citizens.
He enjoyed baking, playing BINGO and trips to the casinos. Most of all, George loved spending time with family and friends. His home was the family gathering place where all were greeted with George's warm smile, witty sense of humor and delicious snacks.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Stella Joan (Schreppel) Lesko in 1991; and brothers, Edward, Daniel and Bernard.
Surviving are his daughters, Kathryn Gaughan and husband, Philip, of Shenandoah Heights, Kathleen Pengrin and husband, Charles, of Ringtown, Georgette Avenoso and husband, John, of Hershey, Diane Chowanes and husband, Edward, of Shenandoah, Maureen Rinker and husband, Don, of Laurel, MD; his grandchildren, Rory Gaughan, Bridget Gaughan, Lauren Pengrin-Hamlin D.O. and husband, Nick Hamlin, Carly Pengrin D.V.M., Ashley Avenoso and husband, Calvin Santiago, James Avenoso, Kristen Zurick and husband, Andrew, Edward Chowanes, Donald Rinker III, Sarah Rinker; his great-grandchildren, Owen George Zurick, Sarah Ann Zurick, Abigail Joan Zurick, Stella Marie Santiago; his sisters-in-law, Joanne Lesko of Shenandoah and Lucinda Lesko of Palmerton; nieces, nephews and cousins. In most recent years, George enjoyed the company of his dear friend, Joanne Schlauch, of Ringtown.
A viewing will be held on Monday, September 12, 2022 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 South Jardin Street, Shenandoah. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at 9:00 am in Divine Mercy Church, 232 West Cherry Street, Shenandoah with Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor as the celebrant. Private interment with military honors will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
