Frank Yarnitsky, age 86 of 366 S. West St., Shenandoah passed away Friday at Carolyn Croxton Slane Hospice Center, Harrisburg.
Born in Mahanoy Plane on July 20, 1925 he was the son of the late Theodore and Mary (Stefano) Yarnitsky.
Frank was a retired coal miner having worked in the local coal industry. As a member of the United Mine Workers of America he served for 10 years as a UMWA representative and organizer.
Mr. Yarnitsky was a decorated World War II Army Veteran having served in the European Theater of Operations. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Five Bronze Stars.
He was a member of St. Casimir Church, Shenandoah and the Holy Name Society of the parish. Frank was a life member of the Polish American Fire Company No. 4, Shenandoah and a member of the Amvets Walter H. Wardigo Post No. 7, the A.P. Damato Medal of Honor Post 792, the Shenandoah Fire Police Association where he had served as president and captain, the Shenandoah Historical Fire Society and the Greater Shenandoah Area Senior Citizens all of Shenandoah; he was also a member of the Six County Firemens Association where previously served as vice-president, the Schuylkill County Firemens Association, the Schuylkill County Fire Police Association, the Pennsylvania State Fire Police Association and the American Legion Post No. 909 of Mahanoy Plane.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were three brothers, Harry, John and Steve Yarnitsky; three sisters, Ann Prock, Helen Pankowitz and Eva Teets.
Surviving are his wife, the former Lorraine J. Stefanski to whom he was married sixty-four years; two sons, Theodore Yarnitsky of Hazleton and Richard Yarnitsky of Harrisburg; one daughter, Rita wife of John Karas of Ringtown; five grandchildren, Angie Yarnitsky, Ricky Yarnitsky, John Karas, Jaime Bayzick and Stephanie Evans; five great-grandchildren, Johnny D., Lynlee and Sienna Karas and Cole and Carter Bayzick; two sisters, Mary Rydzy of Stowe and Sonia wife of Casimir Kuchinsky of Monroe, NY; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 9:30 am from Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S Jardin St., Shenandoah. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am in St. Casimirs Church, Shenandoah. Rev. Msgr. Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Casimirs Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Monday evening from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
