Florence M. Yanall, RN, 98 of Shenandoah Heights passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill East Norwegian Street, Pottsville.
Born in Shenandoah, she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Margaret (Yudinsky) Matalavage.
She graduated with highest honors from the former J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah. Florence also graduated from Saint Mary's Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia where she was president of her class and a member of the Alumni Association. She also extended her study for intensive and coronary care at Geisinger Hospital, Danville.
Florence was employed as Registered Nurse (RN) for over thirty years having worked in many specialized areas. She was also a CPR instructor.
She was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah. Prior to its closing, Florence was a devout and dedicated member of St. George Church. She was involved in many parish organizations and activities including the St. George Guild, the Lithuanian Women of St. George and the Rosary and Sacred Heart Societies. She was the coordinator of the Living Rosary and was a lector. Florence was a Eucharistic Minister in church and also to the parishioners in local nursing homes and those in their homes who were unable to attend Mass. For many years, she served as an altar server for funerals. She also volunteered for the weekly bingo.
Florence was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order. She held every office in the Catholic Nurses Guild of Our Lady of the Rosary, North Schuylkill Chapter. She was a 4th degree member in the Knights of Lithuania, Anthracite Chapter Council 144. She coordinated offertory processions for the annual Lithuania Independence Day Mass that were celebrated in St. George Church. She also organized and coordinated the Lithuanian contingent for the annual Heritage Day Parade of Nations in Shenandoah from 2001 until 2016. She was a promoter of the Miraculous Medal Association in Philadelphia. Florence was also a member of the Retired State Police Auxiliary of Harrisburg, the Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees (PARSE) Schuylkill and Carbon Chapter, AARP, the Greater Shenandoah Area Senior Citizens, BPOE 695 Elks Auxiliary Mahanoy City and the Greater Shenandoah Area Historical Society. For many years, she volunteered with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.
Preceding her in death in addition to her parents were her loving husband of fifty-two years, Joseph A. Yanall; her brother, Anthony Matalavage and his wife Helen; her sister, Beatrice Shomoskie and her husband Edward; one niece, Eleanore McGeary and her husband John; three nephews, Anthony Matalavage, Joseph Shomoskie and Edward Shomoskie.
Surviving are three daughters, Andrea C. Bidwell and her husband Paul of Orangeburg, South Carolina, Corinne D. Crea and her husband Joseph of Shenandoah and Nadine Y. Rieser and her husband Richard of Centerville, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Joseph A. Crea of Virginia, Jessica A. Wolak and her husband David of North Carolina, Nathan and Adam Bidwell both of South Carolina, and Michael, Timothy and Christopher Rieser all of Ohio; three great-grandchildren, Jacob D. Wolak, Elizabeth M. Crea and Bella Bidwell; one nephew and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at 10:00 am in Divine Mercy Church, 232 West Cherry Street, Shenandoah with Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor as the celebrant. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Dawn Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. A viewing will be held on Wednesday morning from 9:00 am until 10:00 am at Divine Mercy Church.
