Ruth A. (Carls) Straub, 83, of Shenandoah, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening at the Shenandoah Senior Living Community.
Born in Shenandoah on November 12, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Otto and Ruth Parrish Carls.
She was a 1949 graduate of the former J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah.
Ruth had worked as a clerk for the former Triangle Shoe Store, Shenandoah.
Earlier, she was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, Shenandoah, where she was active in the church choir, attended Sunday School and was a member of the Womens’ Guild. Later, while residing at the Mahanoy Elderly Apartments, she attended St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Mahanoy City.
Ruth was a woman of great faith; she endured and accepted pain and suffering especially in her last days because of her strong trust in God. Spending time with her family, especially her daughters and grandchildren, was of utmost importance to her.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, were her husband, James T. Straub, on August 30, 1993; two sisters, Jean Schlemmer and Frances E. Pitts; and one son-in-law, Frank P. Ulicny, Jr. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are two daughters, Virginia R. Bachelder and her husband, Lorne, East Stroudsburg, and Jane A. Ulicny and her fiancee, Ray Coletta, New Boston; four grandchildren, Bethany and Nathaniel Bachelder and Christian and Jacob Ulicny; nieces and nephews.
Religious services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah. The Rev. Dr. John Reid and the Rev. Craig Zimmerman will officiate. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights. Relatives and friends may call from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home on Saturday morning.
