Alfred J. “Al” Matuk

Al MatukAlfred J. “Al” Matuk, 93, of Shenandoah, passed away peacefully Saturday evening at Rest Haven nursing home, Schuylkill Haven.

Born in Shenandoah, Jan. 29, 1922, he was a son of the late Peter and Victoria (Jadeszki) Matuk.

He was a graduate of the former J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah, and the Bliss Electrical School, a technical institute in Washington, D.C.

Al was a decorated World War II Navy veteran.

Prior to his retirement, he worked in management for the former Bell Telephone Co., now Verizon, Wilmington, Del., for more than 30 years.

He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish, Shenandoah, and formerly a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, Shenandoah.

US FlagHe was a life member of both American Legion Post 289, Ringtown and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3257, Wilmington.  He was also a member of the Polish American Fire Company, Shenandoah, Defender Hose Company, Turkey Run and Greater Shenandoah Area Senior Citizens.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were his first wife, Florence Matuk, and brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his wife, the former Dolores (Chaplinsky) a daughter, Susan H. Matuk, Ringtown; a stepdaughter, Karen Haupt and her husband, Gary, Gaffney, S.C.; three grandchildren; a great-grandson; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Religious and military services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah.  Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, pastor, will officiate.  Relatives and friends may call from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, Shenandoah, is in charge of the arrangements.
