Joseph J. Swies, age 84 of Shenandoah peacefully passed away Tuesday at his residence. He was a former resident of Pennington, NJ.
Born in Shenandoah on January 1, 1930 he was a son of the late Peter and Christine (Obzut) Swies.
He was a 1948 graduate of the former J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah.
Joe was a decorated Navy Veteran having served his country in the Korean War stationed aboard the USS Columbus. He received the Good Conduct Medal.
Prior to his retirement, Joe was employed as a blender of cordials for Cointreau, Ltd., Pennington, NJ.
Mr. Swies was a member of St. Casimir Church, Shenandoah and the Park Crest Fish & Game Protective Association, Brandonville. When he lived in New Jersey, Joe was also a volunteer firefighter with the local fire department.
Joe was a devoted brother and was more than an uncle to his loving nieces and nephews. He played many roles during his lifetime and will always be remembered fondly by his family.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were sisters, Mary Swies, Julia Hoffman, Helen Marchick, Frances Coco and Elsie Kacin.
Surviving are one sister, Catherine Williams, Suffern NY and many nephews and nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday 10:30 AM in St. Casimir Church, 229 N. Jardin St., Shenandoah. Rev. Msgr. Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Casimir Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.
Relatives and friends may call at St. Casimir Church, Saturday morning from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM. There will be no viewing or services from the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy can be made to St. Casimir Church Memorial Fund, 108 W. Cherry St., Shenandoah, PA 17976.
