Bernard J. Savakinas

 Bernard J. Savakinas, 69, of Girardville passed away Saturday at Ridgeview Health Care & Rehabilitation Center, Shenandoah Heights.

Born in Shenandoah on August 8, 1943, he was a son of the late Joseph and Anna (Donchock) Savakinas.

Bernard was a graduate of the former J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah.

US FlagHe was a decorated Navy Veteran during the Vietnam era and received the Good Conduct Medal for his service.

Bernard worked as a driller in construction.

Mr. Savakinas was of the catholic faith.  He was a member of the former Catholic War Vets and the former VFW Post both of Shenandoah.

Bernard enjoyed gardening and was an avid Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles fan.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was his wife, the former Carole Ritzko in April 2011.

Surviving are two brothers, Frank Savakinas and his wife Terry of Frackville and Joseph Savakinas of Delaware; a sister, Christine Sterner of Shenandoah Heights; nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to prayer and scripture services Friday 1:00 PM at Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah.  Rev. Msgr. Ronald C. Bocian will officiate.  Interment with military honors will follow in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.

    I am so very sorry to hear about Bernie’s passing. He and Carole were wonderful Girardville neighbors. I will always be grateful to the both of them for the many kindnesses extended to both my mother and me throughout the years.
