Irene Theresa Kovalewski, age 84, formerly of W. Poplar St., Shenandoah, currently of 208 Hillcrest Dr., New Cumberland, slipped peacefully into the arms of her loving angels Friday November 18th at Harrisburg Hospital, Harrisburg after a brief illness.
Born in Shenandoah on January 5, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Apolinary and Anna (Gognacka) Lukasik.
Irene was a graduate of the former J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah and worked as a bookkeeper for most of her life.
She was a renowned baker of goodies for the whole of Shenandoah. She was known mostly for her wonderful cakes, cream rolls and Easter eggs; she also helped regularly with Annunciation’s famous pierogie making for many years.
Irene was a member of Annunciation BVM Church, Catholic Daughters of the America-Court Annunciation #175 both of Shenandoah, Park Crest Fish and Game Club, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 143 in New Cumberland, PA and the Camp Hill Chapter of AARP.
A loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, her humor and zest for life will be missed daily by those who knew her.
Preceding her in death in addition to her parents were brothers and sisters, and her beloved husband and best friend, Joseph Kovalewski, Sr. in 1986.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law Joseph and Joann Kovalewski of Frackville, Stephen and Pam Kovalewski of New Cumberland, and Michael and Andrea Kovalewski of Ringtown; her beautiful grandchildren, Janette Ortman and her husband Arthur Ortman of Millville, Missay Kovalewski of Shenandoah and Christopher Kovalewski of Ringtown, Brandon Schmidt of Columbia, MO, Brittany Shultz of Rockville, MD and Mara Shultz of Florida; great-grandchildren, Artie Ortman and wife Laura Ortman of North Carolina and Ambreelinne Ortman of Millville, Nicolai Kovalewski of Shenandoah, and Sylas Schmidt of Columbia, MO; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning at 10:30 am from Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am in Annunciation BVM Church, Shenandoah. Rev. Msgr. Ronald C. Bocian, Pastor will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ringtown.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday morning from 8:30 am to 10:30 am. The family prefers donations to Annunciation BVM Church Memorial Fund, 129 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah, PA 17976 or American Legion Post #143 Auxiliary, 214 Market St., New Cumberland, PA 17070.
