Matthew W. “Matt” Sherakas, age 90 of 202 Schuylkill Ave., Shenandoah Heights passed away Tuesday at Lehigh Valley Medical Center-Cedar Crest, Allentown.
Born in Shenandoah on February 24, 1921, he was the son of the late William and Mary (Stanolis) Sherakas.
Matt was graduate of the former J.W. Cooper High School, Shenandoah where he excelled in football.
He was a decorated World War II Army veteran having served in European Theater of Operations. His decorations and citations include the American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Matt was a miner having worked in the local coal industry. He retired from Counties’ Construction Company. He was a member of the Laborers Local Union #158.
He was also a member of St. George’s Church, Shenandoah, the Greater Shenandoah Area Senior Citizens, the Jerry Wolman Northern Anthracite Chapter of the PA Sports Hall of Fame and played for the Shenandoah Presidents’ Football Team.
Preceding him in death in addition to his parents was a brother-in-law, Wally Tabor.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, the former Rita Toborowsky; a son, Paul Sherakas and his wife Donna of Ringtown; a daughter, Karen wife of David Stadden of Lancaster; three grandchildren, Rachel Box and her husband Gregory of Baltimore, MD, William Stadden and his wife Laurie of Lancaster and Paul Sherakas of Ringtown; two great-grandchildren, Ella Box and Caroline Stadden; a brother, William Sherakas of New Philadelphia, an aunt, Sr. Delphine of the Sisters of St. Casimir stationed in Chicago; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Friday morning at 11:30 AM from Walukiewicz-Oravitz Fell Funeral Home, 132 S. Jardin St., Shenandoah. A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated at 12:00 noon in Annunciation BVM Church, Shenandoah. Rev. Charles Dene will officiate. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Dawn Cemetery, Shenandoah Heights.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of service. There will be no calling hours on Thursday evening.
